The town of Roma is located in the Maranoa region of Queensland, Australia, and is believed to have been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.

The first European to visit the area was explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in 1844, and by the 1860s, sheep and cattle graziers had established themselves in the region, leading to the founding of the town of Roma in 1867.

Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, Roma developed into a thriving hub for the surrounding agricultural and mining industries, with the town's population growing rapidly as a result.

In the early years of the 20th century, Roma was a prominent site for oil and gas exploration, with several successful discoveries being made in the area. The town played a key role in the construction of the main gas pipeline from Queensland to New South Wales, which was completed in 1969 and remains an important piece of infrastructure today.

The farming industry has always been a major part of Roma's economy, with agriculture playing a vital role in the town's growth and development. The surrounding Maranoa region is known for its production of beef cattle, as well as crops such as wheat, sorghum, and barley. The Roma Saleyards, which were established in the late 1800s, remain one of the largest cattle selling centres in Australia.

Throughout the years, Roma has been home to a number of notable individuals, including artist Arthur Boyd, who spent time in the town during his youth, and writer Henry Lawson, who lived in Roma briefly in the early 1900s.

Today, Roma is a thriving regional centre with a population of around 7,000 people. The town's rich history is celebrated through a number of local attractions, including the Roma Historical Precinct, which features a collection of heritage-listed buildings, as well as the Big Rig, a heritage park and oil and gas museum.

Roma continues to play an important role in the Australian economy, with the town's agricultural, mining, and gas industries driving much of the region's growth and development. As a key regional centre, Roma remains a vital hub for the surrounding towns and communities, serving as a cultural and economic centre for the Maranoa region.
