Distinguished and Famous people from Roma

🏉 Arthur Beetson

Arthur Beetson was born at Roma in 1945 and developed his ball skills there while playing in the backs as a teenager. Joining Redcliffe, he moved into the forwards and helped the club win the 1965 Brisbane premiership. Sydney football and Australian selection followed, with later premierships at Eastern Suburbs. His exceptional passing made him far more than a prop expected simply to carry the ball into contact. The two Queensland communities belong to distinct stages of his development: Roma supplied the childhood game, while Redcliffe helped turn that skill into a formidable senior career.

🏉 Darren Lockyer

Darren Lockyer’s route to the Brisbane Broncos ran through junior football at Roma, where his talent attracted the attention of scout Cyril Connell. Born in Brisbane, he made his senior Broncos debut as an eighteen-year-old in 1995. Success followed at both fullback and five-eighth, with four premierships and a long representative career for Queensland and Australia. His ability to read play and create opportunities proved transferable between two demanding positions. The Roma junior pathway helped prepare a young player for first-grade football and the demands of leadership on much larger stages.
